CONFERENCE ON “HUMANITARIAN CRISIS IN SYRIA AND DEFICIENCIES IN INTERNATIONAL PROTECTION, WHAT TURKEY CAN DO" WAS HELD

A conference on “Humanitarian Crisis in Syria and Deficiencies in International Protection, What Turkey Can Do” was held by our Directorate General, Department of Education, Migration Research Centre in the conference hall of DGMM on 22 March 2016.

In the conference, Prof. Dr. Mr. Kemal KİRİŞÇİ who has served as an academic member in Boğaziçi University, Department of Political Science and International Relations, and as Jean Monnet Chair in European integration; who is director of the Centre on the United States and Europe’s Turkey Project at Brookings which is one of the most prestigious think tanks of America and; who has many scientific studies on Turkish foreign policy and migration, took part as the speaker.

In his speech, Mr. KİRİŞÇİ drew attention to the issues that about 60 million people were displaced in 2014 according to the UNHCR’s statistics; international humanitarian aid mechanism has serious problems; protecting refugees is an international duty; Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan protect Syrian refugees on behalf of international community and consequently the international community must also support those countries and perform the duty of burden sharing.

Mr. KİRİŞÇİ who stressed the responsibility and significance of Turkey in international community about Syrian refugees, also mentioned the crisis faced within Syria.

After Mr. KİRİŞÇİ’s presentation which established a perspective on what Turkey can do regarding the international protection, the conference ended with question and answer section.
