75. TURKEY-EU JOINT PARLIAMENTARY COMMISSION MEETING

Turkey-EU Joint Parliamentary Commission’s 75. Meeting was held in Brussels on 11 November 2014 hosted by EU Parliament. Issues on “Turkey-EU Relations and Current Situation on the Accession Negotiations”, “Visa Liberalization Process and Implementation of the Readmission Agreement” and “Current Situation in the Middle East” were on the agenda of two session meeting.
1. Session started with opening speeches of Turkish-EU Joint Parliamentary Commission co-presidents Afif DEMIRKIRAN and Manolis KEFALOGIANNIS and then on behalf of the Turkish Government Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Volkan BOZKIR and on behalf of the European Commission European Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy & Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn gave a speech on “Turkish-EU Relations and Current Situation on the Accession Negotiations”.
Following the speech of Republic of Turkey Ministry of Foreign Affairs Representative on “Current Situation in the Middle East”, “Visa Liberalization Process and Implementation of the Readmission Agreement” was discussed in the 2. Session. Under this title, Republic of Turkey Ministry of Foreign Affairs Representative gave a speech regarding the “Visa Liberalization Process” and Director General of Migration Management Atilla TOROS delivered a presentation on “Migration Management in Turkey and Turkish-EU Readmission Agreement”. In his presentation, Atilla TOROS first mentioned the new migration management in Turkey and stated that Law 6458 on Foreigners and International Protection was the manifestation of Turkey’s thousand year old tradition.
After brief information on the new migration management in Turkey, in the Readmission Agreement part of his presentation Atilla TOROS underlined the fact that Directorate General of Migration Management is the institution in charge of implementing the readmission agreement that Turkey is a party of. Within this framework TOROS explained what was done and will be done regarding Turkey-EU Readmission Agreement and drew attention to burden-sharing in implementing the Turkey-EU Readmission Agreement. He also stated that burden-sharing should be perceived not only financially but also socially and culturally. The meeting ended with general evaluation and question-answer section.
